This weekend sees the annual return of the Wenlock Olmypian Games, dating back to 1850!
I’ll be there representing myself and club for the archery on the Sunday.
It’s set to be a scorcher (which I don’t know if I’ll prefer the hurricane conditions last year) so lots of water and sun screen is on the cards!
Hopefully I’ll have a better showing than last year!
North Portal of the Harecastle Tunnel
Over the weekend I got to celebrate the Potteries Heritage Societies 40th birthday. It was a very interesting event discussing the heritage of the Potteries, from it’s kilns and potbanks to it’s Cathedrals and Canals.
Canals have a special place in my heart, growing up next to the North Portal of the Harecastle / Telford Tunnels on the Trent and Mersey Canal.
What I didn’t know is that there were several more canals in the area that have since been filled in. One of these is the Newcastle-under-Lyme branch of the Trent and Mersey.
The route it followed is still walkable (though you’d have to hop through people’s gardens so don’t) and there is part that is still filled with water in Lyme Valley park.
A super useful and free resource for maps etc that I have found in the past that has also helped before is the site provided by the National Library of Scotland.
The Royal Cheshire Show
This week is the Royal Cheshire Show and I’ll be in attendance helping out with the Alsager Company of Archers’ Have-A-Go.
We’re all pretty much set up ready to go, just need to settle in tomorrow in time for the show on Tuesday!
It’s a great time and a lot of fun.
As a bonus this year, I’m able to be there for the whole event and get to camp there!

I’ll be continuing to build on my stamina and form thanks to the amazing coaches at Alsager Company of Archers ready for the Wenlock Olympics next month. Here’s short video of the event from last year. I didn’t win anything (I was at the stage of only just being able to hit the target at 60 yards with my equipment and it was super windy.
I’ve fired up this site as place to store my thoughts on things that interest me, free from the clutches of social media.
What interests me?
I’ll cover a wide topics such as Archery, IT, Data Privacy, Open Rights, mental health and charity work.
But why here, why a WordPress blog?
Well, I was in the process of setting up a couple of WordPress sites for family and as I already support several charities though a non-profit organisation (more on that in another post) that use it, I thought it best to jump-in and actually use the tool properly, to get to real grips with it and what it can and can’t do.
